Selborne Yew
Taxus baccata · Alton, Hampshire, England · SU 741 337
Gilbert White measured this tree in the 18th century and wrote it into The Natural History of Selborne. On 16 January 1990 a storm threw it down. The fallen bole was left in the churchyard for a time; the site is still known. Lost yews belong in the atlas — absence is data.
Status: lost. A younger yew grows nearby. White's measurements remain a benchmark for historic girth studies.
