Kingley Vale Grove

Taxus baccata · West Sussex, England · SU 824 106

On a fold of the South Downs, Kingley Vale is one of the finest yew woodlands in Europe. Local legend says the oldest trees mark the graves of Viking kings. Ecology says something rarer: a self-willed grove, not a churchyard planting, with trees of many ages under a closed dark canopy.

Recorded here as a grove site (centroid). Individual veterans are tagged on the Ancient Tree Inventory.
